Solutions, delivery and equipment

The problems SIMSAN engineers around, the stages that deliver them, and the technology and industry experience behind the work.

What we solve

Eleven areas where an engineered answer matters more than a catalogue number. Each one describes the discipline, not a specific delivered project.

How a project is delivered

Six stages. Not every project uses all six, and the last three run only where the project needs them and they are applicable.

Industries

The same four measurements run through all of these industries. What changes is the fluid, the pressure, the temperature and the consequence of getting it wrong.

A refinery process unit at dusk, a distillation column with platforms and ladders behind a dense pipe rack carrying instrument stands and transmitters.

Oil and Gas

Oil and gas is a major source of the world's energy and an area of SIMSAN activity, specifically in high steam service, pipelines and refinery sections.

The measurement problems are hydrocarbon flow at custody grade accuracy, pressure and level across a very wide range, and final elements that have to shut in safely rather than fail open.

A chemical process structure of stainless reactors and jacketed vessels over three grating levels, diaphragm seal assemblies on the nozzles and control valves in the lines.

Chemical and Petrochemical

Chemical and petrochemical plants are a major area of interest for SIMSAN.

The characteristic problem is not the measurement principle but the fluid: erosive and corrosive service eats standard wetted parts, so the specification work sits in materials, remote and diaphragm seals, and valve trim selection, alongside the composition and temperature control that the reaction itself requires.

The instrument side of a steel plant, blue local control panels and a water cooling manifold on a walkway with the hot rolling line far behind.

Mine and Metals

Mine and metals, and steel above all, is an area SIMSAN has been active in for many years.

The measurement problems are high temperature, dust and vibration, heavy final elements that need force to move, and process furnaces and utilities that have to be sequenced and interlocked rather than driven loop by loop.

A power plant equipment hall, a row of lagged horizontal pressure vessels with instrument gauges and steam pipework overhead, a control cabinet in the foreground and an overhead travelling crane above.

Power and Energy

Thermal, gas and combined cycle plants share the process nature of other process industries, which is why the same instrument and control disciplines apply.

The load is concentrated in steam and water measurement, combustion air and fuel control, drum level under swell and shrink, and burner sequencing that has to prove safe conditions before it will fire.

A biogas and solar utility site, digester tanks with instrument stands, a gas conditioning skid with flow meters, solar panels and a wind turbine beyond.

Renewable Energy

Clean and renewable energy sources and their related industries are an area SIMSAN does not set aside, out of a commitment to environmental protection.

The measurement and control problems are those of any distributed generation and process plant: remote monitoring, data acquisition, and control of equipment that is not continuously attended.

The evaporator floor of a sugar mill, tall evaporator vessels with sight glasses and level bridles, steam pipes overhead and control valves at floor level.

Sugar Cane and Side Products

Sugar cane and its side product industries were one of SIMSAN's first areas of activity.

The plants combine continuous and batch operation across milling, juice heating, evaporation, boiling and utilities, which puts the emphasis on level and density measurement, steam and energy balance, and control that copes with a variable feedstock rather than a specified one.

Manufacturers we specify, supply and work with

The manufacturers below are brands SIMSAN specifies, supplies and holds experience with, either as equipment held in our own stock or as equipment supplied and worked with on projects. Naming a manufacturer here does not indicate a distribution agreement, an agency, a dealership, or an authorisation of any kind.
